CENTENARY ARCHITECTURE IN NIGERIA
On a trip to Lagos, Nigeria in 2019, I was inspired to carry out the Centenary Architecture project because I saw some of these historical buildings on the verge of collapse, demolition or reconstruction.
The "Centenary Architecture" project is a visual exploration of Nigeria's historical and architectural heritage, focusing on structures that mark significant centenaries in our history. Through this work, I aim to capture the essence of these buildings and their connection to our cultural identity. The project not only highlights the architectural beauty but also tells the stories of the communities and events associated with these landmarks. Centenary Architecture encompasses a fusion of the past and the future, showcasing the rich history and cultural significance of our cities. The project represents my vision of a harmonious blend of heritage preservation and contemporary creativity.
Centenary architecture emphasizes the cultural and historical narratives of the African diaspora, in this case, architecture becomes a means of expressing cultural identity and history; they incorporate symbolism and storytelling. Centenary architecture tells stories of historical significance and the aspirations of a community at a particular point in time.
