French Development Agency (AFD) 15 Years of Impact in Nigeria
In 2018, the Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, launched a significant power infrastructureinitiative aimed at addressing the longstanding challenges in the country’selectricity supply. This project, funded by a $170 million loan from the FrenchDevelopment Agency (AFD), marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s quest to expandand stabilize its electricity grid, particularly in the nation’s capital,Abuja.

The AFD-funded power project involves the construction oftwo 330kV substations, three 132kV substations, and a 330kV transmission line.These critical infrastructure upgrades are designed to significantly increasethe transmission wheeling capacity in Abuja, ensuring that the city’s powertransmission network can meet the growing electricity demands for the next twodecades.
This power project represents a major milestone in Nigeria’senergy sector, particularly in the ongoing efforts to modernize and expand thecountry’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
